The Biocidal Product Regulation (BPR), (EU) No 528/2012, concerns the making available on the market and the use of biocidal products. These products are used to protect humans, animals, materials or articles against harmful organisms like pests or bacteria, by the action of the active substances contained in the biocidal product. The BPR harmonises the rules at Union level on evaluation and authorization of biocidal products to improve the free movement of goods, whilst ensuring a high level of protection to human, animal and environmental health.
On 4 November 2016, the Commission published the Implementing Regulations approving the use of calcium oxide, calcium hydroxide, calcium magnesium oxide and calcium magnesium tetrahydroxide as active substance in biocidal products for PT 2 (Disinfectants and algaecides not intended for direct application to humans or animals) and PT 3 (veterinary hygiene) applications.
Lime biocidal products can be placed on the market in the form of pure active substance, blends or milk of lime and are typically used for the disinfection of manure, sewage sludge, bedding materials, indoors and outdoors surfaces or for the lime washing of walls.
