2030 Energy Strategy

Sep 01, 2023

The European Commission adopted in January 2014 a new “climate and energy framework”. This legislative “package” aims at setting a communication or EU climate and energy policies in the 2020-2030 period, to achieve among others, progressing towards a low-carbon economy.

The framework introduces the following actions:

  • To set a greenhouse gas emission reduction target for domestic EU emissions of 40% in 2030 relative to emissions in 1990 (43 % emission reduction in the ETS sector).
  • Reform of the EU emissions trading scheme to include a market stability reserve
  • A transparent and dynamic governance process to deliver the objectives of the Energy Union.
  • At least 32% target share for renewable energy as set by the Renewable Energy (RES) Directive.
  • At least 32.5% target improvement in energy efficiency as set by the Energy Efficiency Directive.

The framework was adopted by the European Council in October 2014. The targets for renewables and energy efficiency were revised upwards with the adoption of the Renewable Energy Directive and the Energy Efficiency Directive on December 2018.

Our Position

The European Lime Association (EuLA) welcomes the opportunity to contribute to the development of low carbon economy. However EuLA believes that a strong signal in support of the manufacturing industry is needed to support a competitive industrial base. This signal could be delivered by setting a 2030 re-industrialization target in addition to any climate or energy-related targets.

Furthermore, EuLA advocates for a legally binding international agreement on GHG reductions. Any unilateral reduction targets at EU level should be technically and economically feasible, taking into account each sector specifics.
