The European Lime Association (EuLA) welcomes the European Commission’s initiative to
establish an Industrial Decarbonisation Accelerator Act. For the lime sector, 69% of CO₂ emissions
from lime production result from the chemical process of calcination, where limestone (CaCO₃)
is converted into lime (CaO), releasing CO₂ as an unavoidable by-product. These are known as
process emissions and cannot be eliminated through energy efficiency or fuel-switching alone.
As a result, carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies are indispensable for achieving deep
decarbonisation in the sector. Timing is crucial, therefore the deployment of CCS infrastructure
and supportive regulation must be harmonised across Member States and stakeholders, with the
EU playing a leading coordinating role. Without widespread access to CCS infrastructure, full
climate neutrality for lime production will remain out of reach.
