The European Lime Association (EuLA) welcomes the European Commission’s upcoming Communication on a 2040 climate target as part of the EU’s journey to climate neutrality by 2050. EuLA advocates for an ambitious emissions reduction target of -75% to -80% by 2040 compared to 1990 levels, aligning with the EU’s trajectory of a -55% reduction by 2030 and climate neutrality by 2050.
To achieve these targets, EuLA stresses the importance of harmonizing new climate goals with existing legislation and deploying comprehensive measures. This includes integrating carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technologies to reduce emissions, support industrial decarbonization, enable negative emissions, and foster innovation. EuLA also highlights the need for a balanced strategy incorporating energy efficiency, renewable energy, carbon removals, and sustainable land use practices to ensure a holistic approach to emissions reduction and a smooth transition to net-zero.
