BRRC (2013): Assessment of the influence of hydrated lime on the performance of asphalt containing polymer modified binder (PmB)

Sep 01, 2023

OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY – background

The test program aimed to demonstrate the impact of the use of hydrated lime on the performance of a SMA10 asphalt mixture with polymer modified bitumen (PmB). Since a large amount of data in the literature was already available showing in the laboratory the positive effect of hydrated lime, it was the objective of this study to gain as much as possible experience obtained from the field. Therefore, this test program focused in a first phase on the assessment of the performance of SMA10 variants by the construction of test sections in combination with a series of laboratory tests on specimens prepared in the laboratory by the compaction of bulk material and in a second phase a follow up of their performance behaviour over a long period (e.g. 10 years). The latter phase of the study is not a part of this report.
