The European Lime Association (EuLA) highlights lime’s critical role in supporting various industrial value chains, such as air pollution control, water purification, sustainable agriculture, and lightweight steel production. Despite the simplicity of lime’s chemistry, the sector is committed to innovation in areas like energy efficiency, resource optimization, and carbon mitigation.
EuLA’s updated innovation report showcases the industry’s efforts to reduce CO2 emissions through carbon capture and use, enhance energy efficiency, and improve lime product performance. It also emphasizes projects focusing on circular CO2 solutions and reducing environmental impacts during production and use.
The report underlines that approximately 33% of process-related CO2 emissions from lime are naturally reabsorbed within a year via carbonation, a contribution not yet accounted for in carbon footprint assessments. As the cost of CO2 under the ETS rises, these initiatives are gaining visibility, demonstrating the lime industry’s commitment to innovation and climate neutrality goals.
